It is sometimes difficult to dictate boundaries in mountain areas. The Dolomites are a large group that intersects peaks and valleys with a geographical trend from west to east but with a notable extension also in the longitudinal direction. The areas further east were therefore taken into consideration, those which generally refer to Cadore and the province of Belluno with a stop further north in Alto Adige. The mountains of this area are generally less tamed than those of the Western Dolomites. Cadore, probably due to a more difficult economic situation in recent years compared to the Dolomites in the Trentino area, has the great advantage of having maintained its wilderness to a greater extent, also understood in terms of respect for traditions, traditional local architecture and, not lastly, respect for the territory. This is precisely the great advantage of the Belluno Dolomites: the opportunity from now on to enhance all this heritage because it has not yet changed profoundly as has happened in other areas, where urbanization and construction of ski lifts have made the mountain too similar to the plain in terms of anthropization. Unfortunately, this model sometimes clashes with the wishes of the valley dwellers but, perhaps, having abandoned the old patterns which see the ski industry as the only redemption of the mountains, it will be possible to offer it to mountain tourists, such as hikers of various kinds, lovers of art and mountaineers, a much more valid alternative.
