geographically Italian, politically Swiss, culturally Walser strip of land that opens up in the midst of mighty mountains and a pass full of history lying on the edge of the Pennine and Lepontine Alps, between Ossola and Valais, a hinge between Southern and Northern Europe. From the main rib, where the Diveria torrent opened its way creating the wild gorge of the Gondo gorges, the lateral valleys of Zwischbergen "the valley between the mountains" and the Laggintal "the valley of the butterflies" branch off and close in front of of the "Simplon triptych": Weissmies, Lagginhorn and Fletschhorn. On the other side there is a long line of Alps, where the idyllic Alpje basin stands out as a corollary to Monte Leone. Above all, the green meadows of the pass with their guardians enshrining specific eras: the Stockalper Hospice and the Simplon Hospice, and in the bowels of the earth the railway tunnel, also witness to a new age.
