When we talk about rock carvings in the Alps or, more widely, in the world, it is obligatory to refer to that immense artistic-religious heritage that characterizes one of the most evocative Alpine valleys: Valle Camonica. Approximately two hundred thousand engravings illustrate the history of an "open culture" that fits into the vast chronological horizon of ten millennia (from 8000 BC to the present day), in an environment that is not closed and inaccessible, but open to relationships with the Italic and Mediterranean world on the one hand, on the other with the Central European world. However, the gradually growing interest in Camunian engravings which allowed the affirmation of prehistoric art, albeit with great delay compared to classical archeology and the history of Greco-Roman art, only dates back to the beginning of this century. Only recently, however, within the vast phenomenon of prehistoric art, rock art has seen the spread of analysis and classification methodologies based on scientific assumptions, objective data, systematic filings based on a universal language, easy to understand, and usable by any researcher and scholar. One of the first results of the adoption of the new working method is offered, here, by the very Author who developed the method and introduced it into scientific research environments.
