After the success of the specialist texts on the main groups of Alpine fauna, an anthology of 45 animals (amphibians, reptiles, birds and mammals) that run, jump, dig, climb and fly on our mountains. Animals which, in provocatively incorrect terms, we can only define as "beautiful": because they agitate our zoological subconscious by evoking ambivalent feelings of admiration and fear (the wolf, the lynx, the bear, the eagle, the viper), because the their physiognomy arouses tenderness, instincts of care and protection (the roe deer, the squirrel, the oak tree, the pygmy owl), because, funny, they arouse our sympathy by reminding us of the clumsiness with which we too exist in the world (the alpine frog, the tit tufted), because they seduce us with their elegance and the ability to play with those optical illusions that we call colors (the fire salamander, the yellow wagtail, the wallcreeper). A compendium of the most interesting species of the Alps, therefore, aimed at all those who want to know more, and know correctly, about animals glimpsed fleetingly or observed during a walk, about animals not yet seen but which one would really like to see, about animals that we are unlikely to encounter them but they occupy our imagination when we think of the world, despite everything still fascinating and mysterious, of our mountains.
