But despite the promises of trekking agencies, the mountain is still the same, and success is by no means guaranteed, as many tragedies have unfortunately demonstrated. The only certain thing is the enormous transformations, almost never positive, that this influx of Westerners has brought to the environment and even more to the culture of the Sherpas. The protagonists of the French expedition that ascended in '78 return to the same places after twenty years. And they tell us the history of this mountain, from the first explorations to the terrible events of '96, but above all they invite us to reflect on the future we want to give it.
