On 21 July 1832, the thirty-year-old Alexandre Dumas, having narrowly escaped the cholera that raged in Louis Philippe's Paris, left to convalesce for Switzerland and the marvelous Alps. Upon his return he published his "travel impressions", a monumental and compelling reportage, with the famous interview with old Balmat, the first climber of Mont Blanc, who spread the unjust legend of the heroic guide to the detriment of Doctor Paccard. Behind the amazing adventures of the "pioneer" Dumas there is the entire fearful and curious bourgeoisie that is preparing to set out.
