Extremely pretty and a lover of poetry, Chantal Mauduit was 34 years old when, in May 1998, she and Sherpa Ang Tshering were swept away by an avalanche on Dhaulaghiri while they were sleeping in a tent at Camp 2 at 6500 metres. Parisian, she spent her childhood in Savoy where at 15 she discovered mountaineering and became irreparably passionate about it. At the same time Chantal practiced cross-country skiing and paragliding. His was the first world flight descent of the Urus (5500 m.) and the Huascaran (6768 m.) in the Andes. He later discovered the Himalayas trying to realize his secret dream: to climb the fourteen eight-thousanders without oxygen.
