Fifty years after the conquest of Annapurna, the first eight-thousander reached by man, Reinhold Messner reconstructs the history of the main expeditions that to date have challenged what remains one of the most treacherous mountains on the planet. It begins with the story of the memorable feat accomplished in June 1950 by the Frenchmen Maurice Herzog and Louis Lachenal, which ended with a victory that almost ended in tragedy and for this very reason was followed by bitter controversy. We continue with the adventure of a group of English mountaineers led by Chris Bonington, who manage to conquer the very hard spur of the south face. Followed by the feat of the Swiss Erhard Loretan, in October 1984, that of Reinhold Messner and Hans Kammerlander in April 1985, of the Czechs Nazerka and Martis in October 1988. And so on, up to the present day, in a continuous succession of attempts which often, unfortunately, had tragic results.
